Self Assessment Essay

  1. Each assignment had its own purpose to fulfill, the informative reviews purpose was an introductory approach that merely shed light on a subject matter without being biased, it was purely objective information relayed in a manner that was comprehensible to the average reader. The position papers on the other hand were a continuation of research efforts to come up with unique ideas to form a statement and protect that position, whilst offering an objective and secondary perspective. The research proposals themselves were more sophisticated with clear objectives which were to form a hypothesis, establish a niche/ an area that needed more research, and methods in order to go about substantiating the hypothesis.
  2. Linguistics is an essential part of understanding one another, comprehension is key. In the informative reviews it was essential to form a base that wasn’t overly sophisticated nor dull and bleak in material, and the way it was delivered was all the more significant because it has to cater to the community, thus being aware of the over spoken language within the community and its dialects and vernacular were essential to presenting an idea such as the outreach flier. I had the challenge of reciting my informative review in spanish in order to cater to the overwhelming hispanic community, i had to be as explicative as possible in order to get my sustainability plan well dispersed and absorbed. The research proposal on the other hand was a trickier project due to the fact that I had to present in front of an audience my working hypothesis along with a number of methods that were a bit complex.
  3. Institutionalized racism has a long rooted history within science. Several injustices were done against the african american community notably within the contemporary era of the tuskegee and henrietta lacks who were exploited at the hands of scientific research. Throughout my papers I would frequently address these pressing issues in order to create a sense of trust within those that would otherwise despise and be against science and research for its long history in structural racism. Research is such an important aspect when it comes to science, thus when foreign bodies sponsor and actively engage in these research studies there’s likely to be some sort of influence, especially within large corporations who sponsor these studies in order to conduct fallacies that work in the best interest of its sponsor. It is important to investigate every aspect of a study, or in any statement because objectivity is an imperative aspect of science, there is no progression if one is to simply take the words and research of another without investigating it with logic and reasoning. It was fairly simple to make a pairing when it came to my sustainability plan as I looked into every aspect of renewable energies and its drawbacks, and from its drawbacks I was able to pair one another accordingly which in this case was hydrogen fuel and hydroelectric power. Finding a niche within science is a difficult case, having to develop a working hypothesis and scour endless possibilities for areas of research that havent been fully looked into.
  4. The strategies i used for creating the outreach flier was to make it as appealing as it could be as well as have the flier be more intensive when it came to illustrations in comparison to the very little that was written in the flier, and the reason for this was because people are usually drawn more to the colors and the pictures on a flier rather than its subject matter. Instead I used plentiful pictures and orated over the flier itself rather than implement my entire oration on the flier and stockpile it with too much subject matter. I felt nervous presenting in my native language simply because I’m out of practice and my accent isn’t necessarily the greatest in the Spanish language. As for the research proposal presentation i also made sure to use images and other visuals to grasp my audience rather than subject them to sentences upon sentences of scripture. I believe presenting orally is a learned skill that not many possess, it’s a work of art to be able to present orations on a whim with the utmost clarity and confidence. There is a sense of importance when it comes to presenting research orally.
  5. My responses to questions 8 and 9 from the first week of the semester remain largely unchanged. My writing is better, however I still need to work on building confidence and an overall structure when it comes to presenting orally. As for the use of standard american english, i believe it should not be the leading contender for publications of science writing, the general population usually better comprehends science in their native language due to the fact their native language is the language they can think and express themselves creatively.
